ANCHORAGE — Denali National Park officials are holding off on plans to reopen an area closed because of a problem grizzly bear, saying they’ve received new reports of bear sightings there.
The bear bit and scratched a hiker along the Savage Alpine Trail July 1. The park had just reopened the area after it was closed when the bear charged vehicles and on June 22 obtained food from a daypack that a visitor threw to distract it.
Officials had planned to reopen the Savage River area trails on Thursday. But they’ve decided to keep it closed for at least another week after getting several reports of a bear or bears in the vicinity since last Friday.
Park trails in the Mountain Vista area also will remain closed for a week.
