Three weeks after the head of Alaska’s Department of Education and Early Development announced his departure, one of his deputies is headed out the door alongside him.
On Friday, deputy education commissioner Les Morse announced he will retire effective March 1.
That is the same date that commissioner Mike Hanley will step down from his position.
Hanley will be replaced by Susan McCauley, director of the department’s teaching and learning support division
Morse became a deputy commissioner in 2008, five years after joining the state education department, but he has a long history of teaching in Juneau. He was a teacher at Juneau-Douglas High School for years, then served as principal of Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School.
