Before celebrating the arrival of 2018, local dog owners are required to license their dogs.
All dogs living within the City and Borough of Juneau limits must be registered by Jan. 1, 2018, applying to any dog over the age of six months that resides in Juneau for more than 30 days. People can license their dogs through the Gastineau Humane Society.
Licensing dogs, which helps protect dogs and get them home quickly when they get lost, is required by law. It costs $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $45 for unaltered dogs. Owners who have previously licensed their dogs are required to renew their license.
Dog licenses for 2018 are available now at the GHS website, www.ghspets.org. Owners are asked either to send or bring their completed form to GHS with payment and proof of current rabies vaccination.
Licensing fees are collected to support Animal Control & Protection Services, which provides 24-hour emergency services for injured animals, animal bites and loose dangerous animals. If a dog is impounded without a current CBJ license, the owner might be given a citation for failure to license, which carries a minimum fine of $85.
For more information, dog owners may call Animal Control and Protection Services at 789-6997.
