The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has announced plans for road work in the heart of Douglas.
In 2019, road crews will start to repave Douglas Highway — also known as 3rd Street — between the Douglas bridge and St. Ann’s Avenue. The work is expected to last two years.
In a public notice Tuesday, DOT said it is beginning environmental studies for the work. In 2016, DOT announced it was soliciting a firm to design the upgraded street.
In addition to repaving the street, road crews will repair or replace sidewalks, curbs and gutters, work on retaining walls, add guardrails, handrails, lights, and repair culverts where needed.
Anyone with comments or concerns about environmental aspects of the project is asked to email willow.gaber@alaska.gov.
