David Scanlan has been appointed general manager of the Eaglecrest Ski Area, said David Stanley, the president of the Eaglecrest board of directors.
“Scanlan comes to us with all the attributes we were looking for – ski area management experience, an orientation towards community-based skiing, and a commitment to living and remaining in Juneau,” Stanley said.
Scanlan is moving to Juneau from Greenwood, Maine, where he’s been employed as the general manager of Mt. Abram Ski Area since 2013.
Prior to his general manager experience, Scanlan lived in Hope, Alaska, and owned and operated the business Glacier Dyeworks. He co-founded Mountain Rider’s Alliance, an organization that is focused on supporting and creating community owned ski areas and served a six-year term as the chair of the Hope and Sunrise Land Use Advisory Planning Commission for the Kenai Peninsula Borough.
Scanlan has been serving as a board member for the Bethel, Maine, Area Chamber of Commerce since September 2013. He is currently serving as the treasurer of the Ski Maine Association, which represents the 18 ski areas in Maine. In 2016, Scanlan won the Ski Industry Professional of the Year Award from the Bethel area Chamber of Commerce.
Scanlan’s appointment follows the recent resignation of former General Manager Matt Lillard, who accepted a new job with Vermont ski area Mad River Glen, a small, cooperatively-owned five-lift operation. His last day at Eaglecrest was March 2. Interim general manager Nate Abbott closed out the 2016-17 season, which essentially broke even thanks to more snowfall.
Scanlan begins his new position with Eaglecrest on June 26.
