An electrical issue with a switch cabinet on Shattuck Way caused an areawide power outage in the downtown Juneau Friday afternoon.
One of the wires that feeds into the cabinet “had a failure,” which caused that circuit to trip off, knocking out power off in most of the downtown core, said Eric Eriksen of Alaska Electric Light and Power.
“It was kind of centralized to that downtown area,” Eriksen, the company’s vice president of transmission and distribution, said in a phone interview.
AELP crews responded to the incident, which happened around 12:15 p.m., and were able to restore power to most of the affected customers in about an hour, Eriksen said.
He said the only places left that are still without power are the Marine View Center apartment building on South Franklin Street and Emporium Mall, which is near the Shattuck Way switch cabinet. Eriksen said power should be restored to those two places by about 4:30 p.m.
