Amy Gallaway, a Fairbanks history and government teacher, was named the Alaska Teacher of the Year for 2020.
The announcement from Alaska’s Department of Education and Early Development came Friday.
Other finalists include runner-up Ben Griese, a special education teacher from New Stuyahok, who will become the Alaska Teacher of the Year if Gallaway becomes the Teacher of the Year for the United States. That award will be given in spring, according to Alaska’s DEED.
According to the DEED, the award is given to teachers who are experts in the field, colloborate with students and families to create a culture of success and respect and strong communities.
Last year, Anchorage teacher Danielle Riha was a finalist for the national teacher of the year award.
Pamela Garcia, an Auke Bay Elementary School teacher, was a finalist for this year’s teacher of the year award.
