The final significant day of ballot-counting from November’s general election takes place today in regional elections offices across Alaska.
No races are expected to change results as the process of tallying the general election nears an end.
Today is the 15th day after the Nov. 8 general election and the statutory deadline to receive by-mail ballots from overseas addresses. Those ballots must have been postmarked by Election Day, but given the slow pace of postal delivery, they can arrive as late as 15 days after Election Day and still be counted.
Today is also the deadline for regional offices to count all absentee and questioned ballots.
Lauri Wilson, the elections supervisor for Southeast Alaska, said a large number of questioned ballots remain to be counted in House districts outside Juneau. Most of Juneau’s questioned and absentee ballots have already been counted, she said.
According to the latest results — posted on Nov. 18 — Democratic challenger Justin Parish maintains a 212-vote advantage over incumbent Rep. Cathy Muñoz in the Mendenhall Valley.
Once the regional offices send their totals to Division of Elections headquarters, elections officials will review the division totals for irregularities and have said they intend to certify the election by Nov. 29 if everything goes as planned.
