A boat occupant was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after a boat in Auke Bay caught fire and sank Tuesday morning.
Capital City Fire/Rescue was dispatched to the report of a boat fire at approximately 1 a.m. at Don D. Statter Harbor, CCFR Assistant Chief Chad Cameron said in a release.
Upon arrival at the scene, crews confirmed a boat was fully engulfed in flame. Crews used a portable pump at the standpipe system at the dock in attempts to extinguish the fire, and the boat sank at about 2 a.m., Cameron said. No other boats were found damaged.
An occupant was sleeping on the boat at the time of the fire, and was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for further evaluation and treatment of possible smoke inhalation, CCFR said.
Fire Marshal Dan Jager and Deputy Fire Marshal Sven Pearson with the Juneau Police Department are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, although nearby residents reported hearing an explosion.
