Flume Trail along Gold Creek has reopened after an October landslide, the City and Borough of Juneau’s Parks and Recreation Department announced Friday.
The popular wooden walking trail had been closed since the penultimate day of October, when landslides accompanied a two-day rainstorm that saw the capital city soaked by more than two inches of rain.
Alaska Electric Light and Power owns and maintains the flume, and opens the trail to hikers as a public service. CBJ manages the trail.
The company said by email that the October slides damaged the flume internally and externally. Since the storm, AEL&P and hired contractors have removed landslide debris, replaced some supports above ground and replaced some supports and boards below ground.
“The work internal to the flume was difficult and time consuming due to limited access and the cold weather during November,” the company said.
Hikers are advised to be cautious and to watch for additional landslides.
