Buckling up a child in the backseat can be harder than it looks.
Alaska Injury Prevention Center technicians will be in Juneau today helping parents ensure they’re doing it properly.
Free child car seat inspections will take place from 3-6 p.m. at the Chad Erickson State Farm Office, 9109 Mendenhall Mall Road. The inspections will be conducted by certified child passenger safety instructors.
The checkup event is being offered jointly through the injury prevention center, the Juneau Police Department, the Alaska Highway Safety Office and State Farm Insurance.
According to a press release, the Alaska Injury Prevention Center and other agencies conducted 1,488 child car set inspections in 2015, and of those, only 171 seats were installed properly.
“In other words, child passenger safety technicians were able to make corrections to increase the safety of 88 percent of car seats inspected,” the release states. “Common errors included the car seat being not secured properly, harness straps that needed adjustment, or even that the car seat was the wrong type for the age or size of the child.”
