ANCHORAGE — Alaska environmental regulators are monitoring the cleanup of a fuel spill in the interior village of Beaver.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation said village utility workers discovered the spill Tuesday evening while transferring fuel into a storage tank and the transfer hose disconnected. The spill was reported to the DEC Wednesday morning.
It’s unknown how much fuel spilled.
The DEC said a utility worker used old clothing to absorb the fuel. Some remaining fuel was seen Wednesday morning and was removed with absorbent pads found after the initial cleanup. The agency says removal of contaminated soil was initiated Wednesday afternoon.
The DEC said the smell of diesel was noticed outside the school about 200 yards away but there have been no reports of a diesel smell inside the school.
