ANCHORAGE — Most residents of a western Alaska village have been without power since Saturday after a generator broke down.
Anchorage television station KTUU reported the fan on Newtok’s generator malfunctioned, causing the generator to overheat.
The village school has its own generator and many residents spent the holiday weekend in that building.
Power maintenance manager Romy Cadiente said the Alaska Energy Authority and other agencies are working to move a replacement generator to Newtok. He expects power to be restored by the end of the week.
Nearby villages and local organizations are sending groceries and other assistance.
The Coastal Villages Region Fund provided wood and supplies.
A crew from Toksook restored the village’s downed telecommunications systems.
About 375 people live in Newtok.
