The Golden North Salmon Derby is officially over, and, unofficially at least, Don Zenger’s 18.8-pound whopper has taken the top prize.
By 5:40 p.m., with only a few boats waiting to haul out of the water at Amalga Harbor, officials there report that Zenger’s fish hadn’t beat. Officials at Auke Bay said the same thing as of derby close at 6 p.m.
Auke Bay recorded a pair of top-10 coho weighing 17.6 and 17.3 pounds. Those bumped George Houston’s 17-pound coho down to fourth place. Derby officials will have results certified on Tuesday.

Derby fishermen have already donated more coho salmon this year than last, derby co-chair Doug Larson said in a Sunday phone interview.
Last year, 1,100 participants turned in 85 king salmon and 1,658 coho. No king salmon were accepted this year, but derby participants made up for that — and then some — by, as of the latest totals tallied Saturday evening, turning in 2,528 cohos.
The derby sells these “scholarship fish” through local company Alaska Glacier Seafood, putting the proceeds toward Territorial Sportsman’s annual scholarship fund. In 2017, Territorial Sportsman awarded three $12,000 college scholarships to Juneau seniors Simon Marks, Cameron Jardell and Gavin Martin.
Larson said he expects derby fishermen to turn in another 1,000 cohos as they head home en masse around the 6 p.m. closing time.

Former Juneau-Douglas High School basketball coach George Houston has taken second place with a 17.0 coho turned in at Amalga Harbor. Don Zenger’s 18.8-pound fish is still holding down the top spot as of 12:30 p.m.
With time running out for the 6 p.m. close, Zenger’s fish could hold on for the win.

Don Zenger has taken a healthy lead with his 18.8-pound coho turned into Amalga Harbor around 1:30 p.m. Zenger’s fish is about a pound under last year’s top-placing coho, but with the rest of the top 10 fish weighing 16.7 or below, he could hold on through Sunday evening to claim the top prize of $10,000.

Greg Gallant took the lead at 10:30 this morning with a 16.7-pound coho turned into Auke Bay weigh station. Gallant bumped Vernon Martin into second place at 16.5 pounds.

A new winning fish sits atop the leaderboard. Caught Vernon Martin, the winner as of 2:45 p.m. weighs in at 16.5 pounds. Marylynn Meiners’ 16-pound fish is now in second place overall.
At the Auke Bay weigh station, employees of Alaska Glacier Seafood and the tender Charles T. unloaded the first full tote of fish donated to the derby’s scholarship fund. AGS will sell the nearly 600 pounds of fish on behalf of the Territorial Sportsman, who will fund their college scholarship with the proceeds.
Friday, 1:30 p.m., derby grounds
About 70 boats dot the backside of Admiralty Island from Point Retreat to Point Lizard Head, where it looks like a majority of derby fishermen are trying their luck today.
A family entourage of John Wade and family Dorian Wade, Ibrahima Diouf and Katy McKeown had several cohos in the bag already. All five of boats the Empire spoke with in the area had all caught at this point in the day.
Having the most luck was Dylan Kubley, 25, and Abbey Wilwert, 22. The couple, fishing on their new boat the Crusty, had 10 cohos iced down in their cooler. Kubley said they shook twice as many kings from their lines and now were only landing fish they thought were around 14 pounds.
Fishing near the boundary by Point Lizard Head was key to their success, Kubley said, as it’s the first place the cohos hit after coming in from Icy Strait.
Many of these fishermen won’t come in until the evening, officials at Auke Bay report, so there should be a big shakeup in the standings by Friday evening.

A 16-pound coho turned in at Auke Bay leads the derby. More than 700 fishers had their Golden North King Salmon Derby tickets validated, according to personnel at the Auke Bay weigh station, where three fish have been turned in. Most fishermen set out from Auke Bay as Douglas Harbor was quiet as of the 7:30 a.m. start time.
