When it came time to plan this year’s annual holiday open house at the Governor’s Mansion, organizers adhered to a simple rule: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
“It’s going to be pretty similar to years past,” said Lisa Boman, executive residence manager of the mansion. “We make small tweaks every year but nothing major. It’s been 100 years that we’ve been doing this, and it’s turned into a good program.”
Those who plan to attend the open house at the Governor’s Mansion on Tuesday, Dec. 6, can expect to see some of the slight changes from last year return. The heaters in line outside the house will be back, as will the outhouse behind the mansion.
About the only change that Boman said visitors should expect this year is confectionery. Among the mansion’s 25,000 cookies will be two new flavors, Boman said. There will be a peppermint- and cherry-flavored cookies this year. (And the gluten-free cookies, a new addition last year, will return.)
As in years past, there will be lots of candy, too. About 200 pounds of it, Boman said.
Visitors will be able to meet Gov. Bill Walker, First Lady Donna Walker, Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott and Toni Mallott during the event, which will run from 3 to 6 p.m.
Several children music groups will perform during the event.
The segment of Indian Street between Seventh and Eighth streets will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event, according to the Juneau Police Department.
