JUNEAU — An Alaska travel association is running a TV ad touting tourism as a great investment for the state as lawmakers mull cuts to state tourism marketing dollars.
The Alaska Travel Industry Association ad says that as tourism is growing across the nation and world, the state is investing less to convince people to come to Alaska. Association President Sarah Leonard says member dollars paid for the ad.
A House subcommittee recommended further cuts to the tourism marketing program than the governor proposed and called for a plan to move tourism marketing to a self-sustaining program.
The panel also recommended cuts for seafood marketing.
Leonard says her group recognizes that legislators are facing difficult decisions but has urged a “reasonable reinvestment” back into tourism marketing.
