The Southeast Alaska Tribal Toxins (SEATT) partnership has been collecting phytoplankton samples throughout southeast Alaska to monitor for plankton species that can produce toxins and cause human health effects, specifically paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Samples taken July 4 confirmed elevated levels of Alexandrium, the phytoplankton species that produces saxitoxins causing PSP, at Auke Bay in Juneau and Cloud 9 and the graveyard in Craig. Do not harvest molluscan shellfish from these sites.
July 8, molluscan shellfish from Eagle Beach and Auke Recreation Area in Juneau tested near or above the regulatory limit for saxitoxins and should not be harvested at this time.
