Hiker rescued off Mount Roberts

A stranded hiker was rescued off the Mount Roberts trail Wednesday night by Capital City Fire/Rescue and Juneau Mountain Rescue personnel.

Jeffery Craig, 30, of New Jersey called 911 at about 6:30 p.m. after he went off the trail and slid 50 to 100 feet down steep terrain, according to a dispatch report from Alaska State Troopers. Craig reported that he had non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers contacted CCFR and JMR to assist with the rescue, and the Mount Roberts Tramway was utilized to transport equipment and personal up the mountain. The U.S. Coast Guard was contacted and placed on standby, but it was later determined that a hoist operation was not an option due to terrain and weather conditions.

A little after 10 p.m., CCFR reported on its Facebook page that rescuers had made contact with Craig and were determining the best course of action on how to get him out. An update a little after 2 a.m. indicated the rescuers and hiker were making their way down the mountain.

“Because of the weather and steep terrain, they are taking their time to safely get down,” the post read. “We anticipate to be on the road system around 3:30 a.m. Crews and hiker are doing well.”

Craig was subsequently transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for evaluation.
