A Juneau man made a disturbing discovery Monday morning, finding a dead body in his covered outdoor hot tub.
The man, a resident of Muir Street off Glacier Highway near the Mendenhall River, called the Juneau Police Department at just after 9 a.m. to report he had found what appeared to be a human body. Officers responded to the area and removed the cover, verifying that the person inside was dead, said department spokeswoman Erann Kalwara in a press release. A death investigation has begun.
It is not known how long the body had been in the water and positive identification has not been made, Kalwara said.
The body was to be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for assistance in determining the identity and the cause of death. Kalwara would not say whether the body was male or female, adding that any further information would be released after the initial report from the medical examiner.
Preliminary autopsy results are expected later this week and the investigation is continuing, she said.
