A man sustained injuries that were not life-threatening when he was shot in the head Wednesday night near 33-mile Glacier Highway by another man who remains at large, according to the Juneau Police Department.

Corey B. Coleman, 54, of Juneau, is being sought as the suspect in the shooting, according to a JPD statement issued Friday afternoon. He is described as a white male, 5’ 11” tall with a slender build, light brown hair, green eyes, missing part of a finger and may have other injuries to his left hand due to a gunshot injury.

“Coleman’s last known location was walking on a trail toward the Berner’s Bay Cabin off of the dirt road at the end of Glacier Highway,” the statement notes. “JPD and (Alaska State Troopers) have conducted searches in the area and located signs consistent with his presence in that area within the last two days. It is unknown if Coleman hunkered down in the area or returned to the roaded system.”

JPD was first notified about the shooting when a safety dispatcher received a 911 call at about 8:28 p.m. from a woman reporting her husband had been in an altercation with another man.

“The investigation revealed that a 72-year-old man saw a subject trespassing on his property,” JPD’s statement notes. “The man contacted the male subject and an altercation ensued which involved the property owner’s handgun. The property owner sustained non-life threatening injuries including a gunshot wound to the head. He was treated and released at the scene by Capital City Fire/Rescue.”

Coleman fled the scene in a small silver truck before emergency officials arrived, according to JPD.

“Officers and detectives worked through the night and located and impounded a truck matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle,” the statement notes. “The weapon used in the incident was also located and seized.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to call JPD dispatch at (907) 586-0600 or submit an anonymous tip through Juneau Crimeline at: JuneauCrimeline.com.
