The Juneau School District was notified on Friday by PowerSchool, the company that provides its student information system, that the company experienced a potential national cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain customer data.
Kristin Bartlett, the district’s chief of staff, wrote in an email on Friday afternoon that Juneau is unaffected by the attack.
She said a message was sent out Friday to staff and families to reassure the community that JSD was not impacted.
“PowerSchool has confirmed through a forensic investigation that information related to PowerSchool products in use in the Juneau School District was not affected in this incident,” Bartlett wrote. “The company stated in an email sent to the Juneau School District, ‘Again, although your product was not impacted, we wanted to assure you that we are addressing the situation in an organized and thorough manner following all of our incident response protocols.’”
The JSD IT Department is reviewing data logs to independently verify the PowerSchool report, but there is no indication that the incident has impacted JSD PowerSchool data, according to Bartlett.
“PowerSchool has lots of different products and lots of different versions of products, and so they offer lots of different services, and the email that the school district received was that the products that we use weren’t impacted,” she said.
