Travelers can once again move between Skagway and Whitehorse after crews from the Yukon Department of Highways and the Alaska Department of Transportation cleared a pair of avalanches.
On Tuesday, heavy snow caused slides on the Yukon and Alaska sides of the border, sealing the route to traffic. The highway stayed closed Wednesday but reopened at 11 a.m. Thursday, DOT announced by email.
The reopening came just in time for travelers on the Alaska Marine Highway. The ferry Matanuska was scheduled to arrive in Skagway early Thursday afternoon.
