The Klondike Highway will remain closed all day today due to Tuesday’s avalanches on both the U.S. and Canadian sides of the border.
By email, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said Canadian crews are working to address an avalanche near the British Columbia-Yukon border and considering the threat of further avalanches north of Fraser, BC.
The Haines Highway, which was closed Tuesday amid blizzard conditions, reopened today, but Yukon officials issued a travel advisory that indicated heavy, blowing and drifting snow atop an icy roadway.
Alaska DOT officials, by email, said a decision on reopening the Klondike Highway will be announced at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The Alaska Marine Highway System ferry Matanuska is expected to arrive in Haines at 1 p.m. Thursday and in Skagway at 4 p.m. the same day.
