The Floyd Dryden Mathcounts team recently placed second in the state Mathcounts competition in Fairbanks.
On Saturday, March 25, Caden Morris, Dan Degener, Tyler Oudekerk and Liam Kiessling competed with mathletes from around the state. Dan Degener and Caden Morris tied for ninth place in the sprint and target round. The team was coached by Alan Degener. Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School mathlete Henry Hu also attended the state tournament and was coached by Brita Steinberger.
Mathcounts is a nationwide program for middle school students which gives them the opportunity to sharpen their math skills while at the same time having fun with math.
The mathletes not only competed in the tournament but also had the opportunity to stay in university housing, tour the UAF Joseph E. Usibelli Engineering labs, eat lunch with an engineer and tour the Fort Knox Gold Mine. The mathletes also had fun learning how to curl and attending the World Ice Art Championships.
