Magic is coming to Juneau this weekend, for a good cause.
At 6 p.m. Sunday at the Thunder Mountain High School auditorium, magician Robbie Cannon will bring his talents of magic and illusion to town to raise money for the International Association of Firefighters Local 4303.
Cannon, who performs under the brand “Magic by Robbie,” has been preparing for the Alaska State Fair but when a representative from the firefighters’ union contacted him for this fundraiser, Cannon couldn’t resist.
“When he told me about this, I was like, ‘I can take a day off and go do this,’” Cannon said Thursday.
This is the sixth annual summer fundraiser for the union, and funds will go toward better training, better equipment and for charitable activities in the activity. Tickets are still available at Foodland IGA and Super Bear IGA for $10 in advance. Tickets are $20 at the event, and one ticket is good for one adult or two children (12 and under).
Cannon has been performing in Alaska since 2011, and has appeared in Juneau a few times before. He has a few different routines that he cycles through and is always tweaking his performances, and he hopes to match his show with the theme of the fundraiser.
“I don’t have any crazy big props, but I plan on doing some really cool things for this event to make it spectacular,” Cannon said. “Since we’re doing a firefighters’ fundraiser I’ll maybe do some stuff with fire, maybe some big productions.”
Being based in Anchorage, Cannon won’t be able to bring his whole setup (one that usually includes animals), but he’s confident that Sunday’s show will be well worth the price of admission.
“I take pride in what I do,” Cannon said, “so it’s not gonna be a hokey magic show.”
