ANCHORAGE — A Marshall man was arrested and charged with fatally shooting his father’s fiance multiple times as she slept in a home in the western village.
Nick Coffee, 31, of Marshall is charged with first- and- second-degree murder in the death of 62-year-old Marshall resident Anna Rossman, who was shot six times in the lower abdomen with a rifle, according to court documents. A village health aide called Alaska State Troopers shortly after 3:30 a.m. Monday to report the shooting.
Coffee told troopers he got the .22-caliber rifle from a storage area outside the home just before the shooting, obtaining the weapon “for the sole purpose of killing Anna,” according to a police affidavit filed in court and signed by Trooper Brian Haley.
Coffee also said he only stopped shooting because he ran out of bullets, the affidavit states.
Troopers also interviewed Coffee’s father, Aloysius Coffee, saying he told them he was sleeping in his bed with Rossman when he was awakened by at least two gunshots, according to the affidavit. The father said his son was standing a few feet from the bed, with a .22 caliber rifle leaning against a trashcan, the affidavit says.
Aloysius Coffee told troopers his son admitting shooting the woman, but he did not say why he did it, the court papers say.
Coffee was taken to Bethel, where he is being held.
He is represented by the Alaska Public Defender Agency, whose attorneys did not immediately return a call for comment Tuesday.
Marshall is a Yup’ik Eskimo community of about 450.
