Around 2 p.m. this past Saturday, a man walked into Juno Froyo looking to take more than just free samples.

According to a press release from the Juneau Police Department, a call came in at 2:04 p.m. Saturday reporting a theft from the store, located in the 600 block of Willoughby Avenue. According to the employee, a man came into the store and ate a few free samples of the frozen yogurt before going into the bathroom for a long time.

When he emerged, according to the employee’s report to police, the man had paper towels stuffed beneath his glasses to form a mask of sorts. He walked to the counter and grabbed the employee’s pencil pouch, which was on the counter as she did school work, according to the report. He then ran from the store, but a video camera recorded it all, according to the JPD release.

Less than an hour later, another call came in. At 2:50 p.m., JPD officers responded to the report of a burglary in progress at a home in the 500 block of W. Ninth Street. Officers entered the home and found Juneau man Michael James Hoyt, 39, according to the JPD release. The homeowner did not know Hoyt, according to the JPD release.

Officers found that Hoyt had a purse, an iPad, an identification card, cash and an empty cellphone case — all of which were identified as belonging to the homeowner, according to the JPD release. The items were estimated to be worth about $440.

Hoyt matched the description of the Juno Froyo suspect, according to the JPD release, and he was arrested for first-degree burglary (a class B felony), third-degree theft (a class A misdemeanor) and fourth-degree theft (a class B misdemeanor). He was then taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
