A man died after a medical emergency at Dimond Park Aquatic Center Friday night, Juneau Police Department confirmed with the Empire Saturday evening.
JPD and Capital City Fire and Rescue responded to a 911 call at 6:40 p.m. Friday that a man was unconscious at the pool, police say.
CCFR Assistant Chief Ed Quinto said a male suffered a medical condition and that an ambulance was called, but he was unable to go into further details as of Saturday evening, saying he was barred by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations from providing more information.
A responding officer and the JPD sergeant on duty at the time, Sean Phelps, believes the man’s next of kin has been notified of the death but Phelps was unable to immediately confirm that and couldn’t release the man’s name as of Saturday night.
Responding medics attempted to revive the man but were unsuccessful, Phelps said.
Phelps said he arrived on the scene after CCFR and that the man was deceased when he arrived. The man was in the locker room, Phelps said. Judging by the man’s clothing, he appeared to be there to swim or use other pool facilities, Phelps added.
JPD officers conducted a death investigation at the scene Friday night and sent the man’s body to the state medical examiner. Phelps said there were no signs of foul play, but officers still have questions about the death which they hope an investigation by the medical examiner can help answer.
“Just with every investigation we do a thorough investigation to answer any questions that we can,” Phelps said.
When reached by phone Saturday, Dimond Park Aquatic Center head lifeguard Paul Enriquez declined to comment.
