A group of passersby found an unresponsive 73-year-old man at 6:08 p.m. Thursday on a sidewalk in the 200 block of Seward Street. Paramedics pronounced him dead less than one hour later.
Capital City Fire/Rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures on Juneau resident Joseph McDonagh Burke for approximately 30 minutes before declaring he could not be revived at 6:54 p.m., according to a news release by the Juneau Police Department.
JPD spokesman Lt. David Campbell told the Empire by phone Friday that officers were able to quickly identify Burke because he had a wallet in his pocket. Officers also did not see any obvious signs of trauma on his body. The death appears to be the result of natural causes.
Campbell said officers notified next of kin and Burke’s body will be flown to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
