Emily Russo Miller has been named editor of the Juneau Empire.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Deedie McKenzie, Group Publisher of Alaska Media Partners, and Brian Naplachowski, the Empire’s general manager.
“Emily’s commitment to the community of Juneau and journalism as a whole make her an incredible asset to this team,” McKenzie said. “She continues to impress me day in and day out. I believe she will make a great newsroom leader.”
Miller has worked for the Empire for close to six years. She has served as the newspaper’s interim managing editor since late December, and was the deputy editor for the year prior. Before that, she was the crime reporter for four years.
“I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity,” Miller said. “We have a great team of reporters who are enthusiastic and committed to covering local news. I’m looking forward to engaging more with community members and finding new ways to connect with the Empire’s readers.”
Prior to coming to Alaska in the fall of 2011, Miller obtained her master’s degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City, and her Bachelor of Science degree in political science from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where she played softball for three years.
She previously has worked for the Roswell Daily Record in New Mexico as a reporter. A 31-year-old native of York, Pennsylvania, Miller’s love of journalism stretches back to when she was a young girl, reading the newspaper her parents set out for her every morning in front of a bowl of cereal. She continues the tradition to this day.
