Mining company Constantine North Inc. has requested permission to build a 2.5-mile extension to an existing mine road as it prepares new test drilling at a site near the Canadian border crossing along the Haines Highway.
According to Bureau of Land Management documents, Constantine is planning 5-10 years of exploratory drilling as it seeks gold in the Palmer Prospect, a section of federal land that abuts the Canadian border northwest of Haines.
Located on the west side of the Klehini River, the Palmer Prospect is an area of steep mountains accessible mostly by helicopter only. The proposed road, an extension of one built in 2014, would be used to access only the extreme southeast corner of the prospect.
The BLM is seeking public comments on the road extension. To submit a comment, visit the BLM’s national comment registry at https://eplanning.blm.gov/epl-front-office/eplanning/nepa/nepa_register.do
