JUNEAU — U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski will be traveling in Alaska next week as part of her re-election campaign and won’t be attending the national Republican convention.
Rachel Kallander, a spokeswoman for Murkowski’s re-election campaign, says the convention is about a month before Murkowski’s primary and that Murkowski has a packed travel schedule during the Senate break.
The convention begins Monday in Cleveland. Alaska’s other U.S. senator, Dan Sullivan, has said he plans to attend at least part of the convention.
Kallander says Murkowski is scheduled to leave for a trip next Tuesday in which she will travel by small plane and boat along the Yukon River to visit western Alaska communities.
Matthew Shuckerow, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Don Young, says Young traditionally hasn’t attended the convention and decided months ago to be in Alaska during the event.
