The Anchorage chapter of the NAACP has partnered with the Alaska Republican Party on a resolution in support of a bill reforming Alaska’s criminal justice and sentencing system.
In a pair of emails Monday, the Anchorage chapter of the NAACP and the Alaska GOP said they have the same goal: reducing the cost and scope of incarceration in Alaska.
“In far too many cases, the punishment simply does not fit the crime. There should be accountability but in far too many instances the punishment is disproportionate to the crime. It would be more beneficial if we invested more in treatment, rehabilitation and education,” said Wanda V. Greene, NAACP’s Anchorage president, in a prepared statement.
The Alaska Senate is debating Senate Bill 91, a comprehensive sentencing and criminal justice reform bill. It is in the Senate Finance Committee.
