NOME — A Nome man has been fined for shooting a grizzly bear last month near his community’s trash dump.
Alaska State Troopers say 46-year-old Daniel F. Phelps on Tuesday pleaded guilty to harvesting a bear within a half-mile of a solid waste disposal facility.
Troopers say Phelps and a juvenile from Wasilla on Sept. 21 shot the bear 250 yards from the Nome dump.
Phelps was fined $1,000 with $500 suspended. He was placed on probation for two years and ordered to pay $1,300 in restitution.
The juvenile was fined $500, placed on probation for one year and ordered to forfeit a gun that had been seized.
