DELTA JUNCTION — A 25-year old Alaska woman died Sunday when she was buried by an avalanche.
Alaska State Troopers say Claire Sundgren of North Pole was near Summit Lake when she was buried.
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says by email the incident occurred in the general vicinity of the venue for the Arctic Man Classic, a snowmobile and downhill skiing event.
A witness told troopers Sundgren was on a parked snowmobile at the bottom of a hill when the avalanche was triggered by another rider.
Troopers took a call on the incident just before 3 p.m.
Bystanders dug Sundgren out but she could not be revived.
Emergency responders from Fort Greely and Delta Junction retrieved Sundgren’s body. An autopsy is scheduled.
