Juneau’s stand up comedy group Club Baby Seal will celebrate their one-year anniversary Friday with an open mic performance at SALT restaurant.
Comedians 21 and over are invited to perform five minute sets at the event, which starts at 10 p.m. Registration can be found online at theclubbabyseal.com or through email at theclubbabyseal@gmail.com.
Alicia Hughes-Skandijs, a founding comedian with the club, said Club Baby Seal has grown fast in its first year.
“It’s crazy how far we’ve come in a year,” Hughes-Skandijs said. “We’ve had a great reception locally. It’s exciting to feel like we’ve been successful in creating enough of a scene.”
Hughes-Skandijs and a small group of friends started the club last year to create a more structured setting to practice their stand up chops.
“The first show sold out really quickly, and it’s really cool how it sort of snowballed from there,” Hughes-Skandijs said.
Friday’s open mic will be the first of a kind for Club Baby Seal.
“This is pretty neat to get the public involved. It will just be really neat to see what Juneau comes up with,” Hughes-Sakndijs said.
If space allows, comedians who are “sitting on the fence” of performing will be allowed to sign up the night of, Hughes-Skandijs said, but she cautioned those interested to sign up via email because the set list might fill up fast.
