ANCHORAGE — Officials say two orphaned moose calves were captured at Alaska’s Denali National Park and Preserve Friday and will be moved to a wildlife center south of Anchorage that takes in orphaned and injured animals.
Park officials say the relocation to the Alaska Wilderness Conservation Center comes after officials became concerned about increasing interactions between the calves and people around the park entrance.
Officials say the calves were orphaned in early June when their mother was killed in an illegal shooting near the Denali post office. Officials say the calves were regularly monitored and seen feeding with other moose.
Officials say they initially decided to allow the calves to stay put and not intervene in natural processes. They say that the situation changed with the calves’ increased encounters with humans.
