JUNEAU — Following the Senate’s passage of legislation to restrict schools from contracting with abortion providers for sex education classes, lawmakers plan to hear a companion bill laying out penalties for violations.
The Senate Education Committee plans to hear SB 191 Thursday.
The bill would not allow employees or representatives of an abortion services provider to deliver instruction on any topic or distribute materials to students in public schools.
Republican Sen. Mike Dunleavy’s bill would allow teachers who knowingly violate the restrictions to be fired, doctors to be sanctioned and abortion services providers to be held liable for civil penalties and damages.
Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands said this bill and the measure that passed the Senate Monday are unconstitutional attempts to deprive students of sex education.
