Construction on 10th Street is nearing completion with paving occurring on Wednesday. The section between Egan Drive and Glacier Avenue is part of a multi-phased project by the City and Borough of Juneau’s Engineering and Public Works Department.
Although there is no firm date due to weather-dependent tasks yet to be done, the city anticipates reopening 10th Street by the end of September, according to Meredith Thatcher, a CBJ spokesperson, in emails on behalf of chief city engineer John Bohan sent to the Empire this week.
The work on 10th Street is part of a project to replace underground water, sewer and storm drain systems in the area. Additional work includes upgraded lighting and improved sidewalks and pavement, according to Thatcher.
“Our underground utility systems are old and in danger of leaks and catastrophic failures that would cause service interruptions,” she wrote.
The current 10th Street reconstruction costs approximately $1.5 million.
The two-year project will also reconstruct F and 8th streets. In 2025, the city plans to rebuild F Street between the Juneau Fire Station downtown and 10th Street, and 8th Street from Glacier Avenue to F Street.
While disruptive to drivers, the long-term benefit is important, according to Thatcher.
“These projects include big improvements” to prevent failures from occurring, she wrote. “It’s a major effort and we’re proud of the strong work from our teams and contractors.”
