Petersburg’s Sandy Beach is safe to swim in once more.
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation released a statement Monday saying that water quality tests found that bacteria levels off the beach are now within regulatory limits.
Last week, testing performed by the Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition found fecal coliform bacteria above state limits. That bacteria is typically found in waste from warm-blooded animals including humans, birds and seals.
DEC recommended against swimming from the beach until bacteria levels subsided.
