Chicago-based poet Roger Reeves will be visiting Juneau as part of a three-city Alaska tour in mid-February, hosted by 49 Writers with support from the Alaska Humanities Forum.
On Feb. 14, 6 p.m. at the Mendenhall Valley Public Library large meeting room, Reeves will give and reading and craft talk “Parrhesia in a Post-Fact Regime.” In this craft talk and reading, using the rhetorical figure of parrhesia, which means to speak candidly and boldly in the face of authority even under the threat of death, Reeves will investigate how poetry and poets might utilize parrhesia as both resistance and potential engine for the creation of poems and poetry. FREE in partnership with Juneau Public Libraries.
Reeves received an M.F.A. in creative writing and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas, Austin. He was a Ruth Lilly Fellow, a two-time Bread Loaf Scholarships recipient, a Cave Canem Fellow, a Pushcart Prize winner, a National Endowment for the Arts fellow, and a Whiting Award winner. He is an Assistant Professor of Poetry at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and a 2014–2015 Hodder Fellow at the Lewis Center for the Arts, Princeton University.
