Police: 2 arrested after $26,500 of meth found in package

K-9 alerted authorities to suspicious package.

An Arizona man and Juneau woman were arrested on drug charges after members of an anti-drug task force found $26,500 worth of methamphetamine in a suspicious package, according to police.

Christopher Glen Shanks, 31, of Arizona and Autumn Ann Herron, 25, of Juneau were arrested Wednesday on third-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance charges — class B felonies —and taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center, according to Juneau Police Department.

The arrest came after members of the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs Task Force on Monday, Jan. 30, located a suspicious package being shipped to Juneau, according to police. K-9 Buddy alerted to the package, indicating that the package may contain drugs. After searching the package, police found 177 grams of methamphetamine.

Wednesday, members of the anti-drug task force delivered the package to a residence in the 5800 block of Churchill Way, and contacted the residents once the package was opened, according to police. A man was seen leaving the backyard of the residence, jumping the fence, and later located a short distance away. Police identified the man as Shanks.

Inside the residence, police contacted a woman they identified as Herron.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Herron on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Alaska Court System. A preliminary hearing for Shanks is set for Thursday afternoon.

In an email, JPD spokesperson Lt. Krag Campbell said in an email that the suspicious package and subsequent arrests are unrelated to an arrest made last month that also stemmed from a suspicious package containing methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Additionally, Campbell said he has not noticed a significant uptick in drug arrests related to methamphetamine.

“Sometimes things come in as a group and then there is a lull,” Campbell said.
