Police arrest four for DUIs over holiday weekend

The Juneau Police Department saw a surge of calls over the Fourth of July weekend.

JPD reported receiving 852 incidents from Friday morning until 5 a.m. Wednesday, JPD Public Safety Manager Erann Kalwara said in a release.

Police officers conducted 62 traffic stops in that time period, and arrested four for drunken driving. JPD received 16 calls from the public reporting possible drunken driving.

Here’s the breakdown of incidents, provided by JPD:

• 9 motor vehicle accidents

• 38 suspicious activity calls

• 29 welfare check requests

• 14 intoxicated person calls

• 14 fights in progress

• 31 disturbances

• 23 domestic disputes or assault

• 15 trespassing issues

• 17 noise complaints

• 37 fireworks complaints

• 36 traffic complaints and traffic hazards

Officers made the following arrests:

• 4 driving while intoxicated

• 2 out of state warrants

• 6 local warrants

• 6 felony charges

• 14 misdemeanor charges

In 2016, JPD tracked 739 incidents, with more fireworks calls (46) but fewer noise complaints (9), fewer fights (9) and disturbance calls (21), one more intoxicated person call (15) and more than twice as many drunken driving arrests (9).
