A small collection of candles and flowers sit outside a Lemon Creek trailer in remembrance of Kristina Elizabeth Young, 36, whose body was found Tuesday in the shallow waters near a Douglas beachfront.
The discovery of Young’s body comes two days after a passerby found her brother, George Benjamin Young, 40, lying face down dead in Lemon Creek.
It was a Douglas resident who spotted Kristina’s body through her binoculars near the 6000 block of North Douglas south of Falls Creek, Juneau Police Department spokesman Lt. David Campbell said.
Campbell said the cause of the siblings’ deaths remains unknown and more information is needed from the state medical examiner before the investigation can move forward. A preliminary report from George’s autopsy is expected to arrive today, and from there investigators will begin to determine what may have happened the Sunday evening when the pair was last seen alive. What police know now is that items belonging to Kristina and her brother were found along the banks of Lemon Creek near Glacier Highway. Among those items included liquor bottles; Kristina was recorded on a surveillance camera purchasing the alcohol earlier on Sunday.
Campbell said the security camera footage show Kristina wearing a bright green top, which later helped identify her. Alaska State Troopers and members of the Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search used her clothing description during their search of the Mendenhall wetlands on Monday to help locate her. Troopers suspended their search by end of business day Monday. SEADOGS continued covering ground on Tuesday, team manager Bruce Bowler said, however, they were searching on the other side of Gastineau Channel, away from where her body was eventually discovered.
“She was wearing that same green top she was wearing (in the surveillance footage) when she was recovered,” Campbell said.
