ANCHORAGE— North Slope Borough police say the officer involved in a fire official’s fatal shooting in Barrow acted after the man pointed a shotgun at police.
Anchorage television station KTVA reported that 36-year-old Barrow volunteer fire chief Vincent Nageak III died at the scene in the early Wednesday morning shooting. Nageak also was the nephew of state Rep. Benjamin Nageak, a Barrow Democrat.
Police said the incident occurred after officers were called to a home at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, and children inside were evacuated, along with the person who made a 911 call to police.
The officer, whose name is being withheld for 72 hours, was not injured.
Alaska State Troopers have stepped in to investigate after the borough asked for their assistance.
