Juneau police contacted two people wanted for questioning about a Friday shooting where a 19-year-old woman was shot in the head.
Juneau Police Department spokesman Lt. David Campbell issued a news release Saturday morning saying officers contacted Katherine Milton, 46, and Rafael Flores, 51, while they were at Fred Meyer on Friday night.
Police began searching for Milton and Flores after a weapon discharged around noon Friday at the Coho Park Apartments on Amalga Street in the Mendenhall Valley that struck the 19-year-old woman. First responders found a woman bleeding from the head when they arrived on scene, and a man reportedly jumped from one of the complex’s windows and ran off into the woods.
Campbell says all those present when the shooting occurred are accounted for, and the department’s investigation revealed that a weapon was fired from the second level of the residence and the bullet traveled through the floor and struck the victim in the top of the head.
The woman was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment and then medevaced to Anchorage. The Empire was not able to confirm the woman’s name when contacting Providence Medical Center for an update on her condition.
The news release did not say who fired the shot or provide specifics as to how Milton and Flores were involved.
“Both Milton and Flores met with JPD detectives and were later released,” said Campbell in the statement. “JPD no longer needs public help in locating Milton and Flores.”
The investigation is still ongoing, and police say anyone with knowledge of the incident should call them at 586-0600.
Campbell told the Empire on Friday that the initial 911 call came from someone inside the home. Campbell also indicated that a neighbor may have also been involved in making the report.
On Friday evening JPD asked for the community’s help in finding Flores and Milton. The department released their photos to the public, provided a physical description and asked residents with information to call JPD.
Officers on scene early on Friday had interviewed multiple people and were “putting it all together and getting search warrants,” in the early afternoon, Campbell said.
JPD was assisted by two Alaska State Troopers.
