ANCHORAGE — The principal of an Anchorage elementary school has apologized after the school sent a message urging action against proposed marijuana businesses.
The information sent through the school’s automated phone message system urged parents to attend an Anchorage Assembly meeting Tuesday.
The message called for parents to testify against cannabis businesses applying to open near Campbell Elementary School.
Alaska voters in 2014 approved legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.
The school phone message is considered partisan. School district spokeswoman Heidi Embley tells Anchorage television station KTUUthat advocating for one position over another is not an appropriate use of district resources.
Campbell Elementary principal Michelle Johansen says a staff member sent out the original message. Johansen used the automated system Tuesday to send an apology.
