JUNEAU — The wife of late state Rep. Max Gruenberg wants her husband’s legislative records to help his work continue but officials say she can’t have them.
KTOO-FM reported that Kayla Epstein says she wants to make sure the legislation her husband was working on gets into the hands of legislators on both sides of the aisle who could continue his work. Gruenberg died Feb. 14
Doug Gardner with the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency’s Legal Services office says Gruenberg’s papers are protected by legislative immunity and therefore cannot be distributed.
Anchorage Republican Representative Craig Johnson cited Gardner’s opinion in denying Epstein access to the records.
The state followed the same rules after Palmer Republican Rep. Carl Gatto died in 2012.
