A man arrested in September after allegedly trying to burglarize Safeway while employees hid has been sentenced to 22 months in prison.
Kurtis Detemple, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree burglary for the break-in. Misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree theft and fourth-degree criminal mischief were dismissed as part of the plea agreement, which included a separate criminal case.
The sentence was imposed Dec. 14; 21 of the 22 months were suspended, and he also received credit for time served. He will be on probation for three years.
Detemple was arrested on Sept. 10 after a Safeway night stocker called the Juneau Police Department at about 3:36 a.m., stating that someone had broken into the store and was currently inside. Officers arrived and found a smashed window near one of the main entry doors. Officers saw a man, whom they later identified as Detemple, walking around inside and then leaving with some merchandise.
Damage to the store was estimated to exceed $1,000; approximately $50 worth of merchandise was stolen. Detemple was court-ordered to pay restitution in an amount to be determined later.
