Southeast Alaska Conservation Council executive director Malena Marvin is resigning amid a personal health crisis.
The news was first reported by Ed Schoenfeld of CoastAlaska public radio.
Marvin has led SEACC, one of Southeast Alaska’s most notable conservation organizations for two years, and has in recent years inspired opposition to transboundary mining.
SEACC was formed in 1970 to oppose large-scale logging in the Tongass National Forest. It has since expanded its scope to support climate change, local sustainability and fisheries issues.
Marvin told Schoenfeld that she is fighting breast cancer. She said her outlook is good, but she needs time to recover.
SEACC is advertising for Marvin’s replacement.
